The American electric bike company Lightening has revealed a new project called Tachyon NB. The Tachyon NB is an electric motorcycle capable of 250 Mph plus. The name, Tachyon, is derived from a hypothesis made in the ‘60s that a particle exists that exceeds the speed of light. Lighting is hoping to beat the current electric motorbike land speed record of 283mph set by Voxan motorcycles. Lightning has a history of breaking records, being the first to break the 200mph barrier for electric bikes and winning the Pikes Peak hill climb in 2013.
Lightning is located at 2360 Technology Parkway, Hollister, CA 95023. Lightning’s mission is to build world-class, two-wheel electric transportation with superior efficiency, performance, and affordability to current gasoline alternatives. The first challenge was to develop technology that is equal to or better than gasoline-powered motorcycles.
Lightning seeks opportunities to compete to develop and prove our technology and has established its dominance by winning the first North American Electric motorcycle road racing championship in 2010. In 2011, Lightning set the land speed record at 215.960 mph(top speed of 218.637 mph) and became the world’s fastest production electric motorcycle.
Cutting-edge technology for Tachyon NB
This electric motorbike has been developed alongside CBMM, a Brazilian firm that specializes in a unique material called ‘Niobium’. This material is said to be revolutionary for vehicle making due to its strength and lightweight. The heavy use of niobium in Tachyon Nb is all over the bike, from the brake discs, the charger, and the swingarm.
Using Niobium, the lighting was built to reduce the weight of the charger by 9 kg without losing power or overheating. Niobium is a unique metal, that when mixed at 0.1% with other metals, forms a superalloy that is incredibly stable at different temperatures and becomes much stronger. Niobium is also used in a host of other things like MRI machines and ultra high-speed charging battery cells.
Lightning integrated the race-proven technologies into their customer products – the Lightning LS-218 in 2015 and the Lightning Strike in 2019 which were well received by the market. Lightning is a true technology company with 14 years of developing EV capabilities through competition on both the racetrack and in the product market.
The race for the world speed record by Tachyon NB
Lightening is betting big on the Tachyon NB and is all set to conquer the electric land speed record. Here things get a bit confusing and I will explain to you why. Now Lightning claims that the Tachyon NB is capable of achieving speeds of above Mph plus. I don’t doubt the capability of Lightening, but the fact of the matter is that currently the electric motorcycle land speed record is held by the Voxan Wattmann which hit 283mph at Space Florida’s Launch and Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center with double WorldSBK Champion Max Biaggi at the controls in November 2021.
So did you get my point that if the Lightening’s claims of 250 Mph + is far less than the already claimed world record by Voxan of 283 miles? Now it remains to see that the Tachyon NB is capable of far more than 250+ Mph or the claim by Voxan is not considered to be verified. The land record speed event was scheduled at Bonneville, but unfortunately, the latest Speed Week was canceled due to flooding. Stay tuned for more news on related topics.
