What is this behemoth? Munro MK1

This giant massive and bulky-looking vehicle is not from any renowned brands like GM, Bolinger, or Revan. It’s called the Munro MK1, from Scotland. The company is yet another electric 4×4 SUV or electric off-road car manufacturer trying to get as large a piece of cake in the crowded EV space and EV startups.

Primarily the vehicle was called All Terrain All Electric or in short atae when the company was founded in 2019, the Glasgow-based Munro Vehicles (Munro being a term for a mountain, mainly in Scotland, exceeding 3,000 feet) has been testing its Munro MK1 all terrain electric development mule since June 2021 with the hopes of a public launch in October 2022 followed by first deliveries in March 2023—if all goes according to plan, of course. And Munro has partnered with a company called Wyre for distribution in the United States. Well, the time to come will tell that this giant-looking SUV is able to burn the rubber on the American Roads.

Munro MK1 SUV specifications

The Munro MK1 is a fully electric 4×4 SUV. Its battery has 80.1 kWh of usable capacity good for 168 miles of driving or 16 hours of off-highway use, according to Munro. It has a 101-kW maximum charge rate, which can top up an SUV from 15 to 80% in a matter of 36 minutes flat, which I think is not bad at all.

The Munro MK1 electric SUV is a body-on-frame, five-door, 4×4 utility vehicle—that features a fully galvanized, high-strength steel chassis. It uses its 376 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque to push the 5,500-pound vehicle to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, as reported by Munro. It has a max payload of about 2,200 pounds and can tow upwards of 7,700 pounds.

On the road, it has a top speed of 85 mph and the company is working hard to make it street legal compliant, as the certification could matter a lot for the success of this Munro MK1 SUV. Munro says it offers a comprehensive warranty, remote software updates, spare part availability, mid-life hardware upgrades, straightforward maintenance, and modularity.

Munro MK1 teams design philosophy

As per the company, Munro says that “off-highway performance is our first design priority: rely on mechanical components that have stood the test of time.” Its high stance (that’s a lot of inner fender showing!), high ground-to-body clearance (18.9 inches), huge tires, utilitarian aluminum body panels, chunky front, and rear fenders, and crazy angles viz approach, 84 degrees; departure, 51 degrees, visually attest to that priority. Underneath, the Munro has a permanent mechanical four-wheel drive and a two-speed central transfer case with a locking differential. You can also get front and rear anti-roll bars, underbody protection, a front bull bar, a winch bumper, and front and rear electronic differential locks.

Munro MK1 choices and trims

There are three trim options for the Munro MK1: Core, Utility, and Tailored, each adding features for work and specific needs. Gloss, satin metallic, and textured Raptor finishes are available in yellow, black, white, green, and grey, with more options for the Tailored trim.

Munro MK1 availability

Munro has a long way to go uphill. There are plenty of EV startups popping up every day. Only the times to come shall say how this start-up holds its ground. This could well be one of the best electric 4×4. Stay tuned for more about this massive and appealing SUV. At least I feel so let me know your thoughts in the comment section. The company is yet struggling to make it to the US market. The official website Munro says it’s designed and built in the UK. There the SUV is available for pre-orders but sadly that’s for the UK market.
